Interserve History

A Long history
For more than one and a half century, Interserve has been touching the lives of people living in hard places. As a mission agency with a long history, Interserve is the testimony of God's grace and faithfulness. It started in the mid-19th century when a group of women from England pioneered work to hellp needy women and children in India. The women in those days were deprived of education and adequate medical care and lived in secluded quarters. Moved by compassion, the hard work and sacrifices of the early pioneers brought healthcare, education and the good news to the women and children. From its humble beginnings as a women medical mission, Interserve had evolved and expanded to what it is today.

Interserve Today
Today, Interserve takes on a different profile compared to its early days as a medical mission. Over the years, the organization has changed its name more than once to reflect its changing character.

The name "Interserve" was adopted in the eighties. "Inter" refers to the international characteristics of the fellowship. People in the fellowship are international as they come from different nationalities and go into different countries to serve. They also come from different denominations, hence the fellowship is interdenominational. "Serve" emphasises that Interserve people are servants of God, called to serve their fellow men. From its beginning in England, Interserve has blossomed into a fellowship with offices in various countries which send partners to serve communities in cross-cultural ministries. In fulfilling its mission to serve, Interserve works in partnership with churches, agencies and organizations.

Interserve Singapore started in the late eighties with its first partner serving in Nepal. Through the years, Nepal seems to tbe the favourite destination of its partners and short-term medical interns, even though lately, there have been a number serving outside the Indian sub-continent. The committee comprises people of different vocations but with the vision and passion to send people into different lands to serve in holistic ministries.
